It will be no canoes and lots of rock this summer in the Phoenix area as Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp comes to Arizona for the very first time in 2007. We'll host two week long sessions this summer, the first of which will kick off on June 18. As in all cities this summer, Camp jam will offer two unique programs, one for ages 11 to 17 and the other for the pint size rockers 7 to 10 years old. Get plugged in below on the dates and locations for our rock music camp program and some great places to grab gear for camp. (photo to left by Karl Autry)

Music scene info:
Phoenix has always had a rich local music scene, being close enough to LA to pick up the latest trends but far enough to develop its own unique personality. However, for the most part none of the local bands have made a national impact. One of the downfalls of being close to LA is that most musicians will pick up and leave for greener pastures.
Notable bands or artists from the 60's and 70's that were spawned by Phoenix include Alice Cooper, the Tubes, Goose Creek Symphony, Hub Kap and the Wheels, The Vibratos, Floyd & Jerry, Thackeray Rocke, The Grapes Of Wrath, Mike Condello, Phil & The Frantics and The Hearsemen. Most of these were more popular regionally making occasional blips on the national radar, except for Alice Cooper who became an extremely big influence on the early metal scene.
In the early to mid 90's, on the heels of the grunge explosion, the Gin Blossoms from Tempe took national radio by storm with their hits "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You".
In the mid to late 90's, the Phoenix-area began to develop a strong indie scene that has produced many nationally known acts, most famous of these being Jimmy Eat World, especially their song "Phoenix Sky Harbor", from Mesa. They remain a very popular national act to this day emerging from the underground with a poppier sound that was first seen on their hit album, "Bleed American".
Building on the recognition that Jimmy Eat World garnered for the Phoenix scene, today there are many indie/punk/DIY bands that have gained popularity. That list of bands features The Format, SCARY KIDS SCARING KIDS, A Change of Pace, blessthefall, Eyes Set To Kill, Greeley Estates, Lydia and Goodbye Tomorrow.
