Video of Camp Jam Kidz Friday Night Concert in Chicago

Thanks to Fiona for posting this video on the Camp Jam MySpace Page. This is her 9-year-old daughter performing for the first time ever on stage at Camp Jam Kidz, the rock music summer day camp for ages 7 - 10.

Here is what the proud mom had to say about the whole experience on her MySpace page:

She decided she wanted to start a band so we spent a couple weeks at Camp Jam, a rock school founded by one of the 38 Special band members. Delaney is the lead singer in the clip.

This is from a concert her group put on just a few days into it. They picked "Blvd of Broken Dreams" to do. Keep in mind... she'd NEVER sang on stage before and these kids only met and picked up their instruments a few days before... Still, I'm pretty proud of the chutzpah. The idea of singing in front of an auditorium of teenagers and adults scares the &*)$ out of me even now. But she wasn't even nervous. (insert beaming mother smile here).
A week (and voice lessons) later she NAILED "Smells Like Teen Spirit"... but that dvd is for another day.

Since camp ended, the music bug has bitten another of the offspring. My sweet, shy 6-yr old announced she has fostered a hidden craving to, as she put it when looking at my shocked face, "rock out on the drums." Since playing the drums is something I always wanted to do, I got a full-sized set so that we both could use it. And guess what. I suck, she's great. Sigh. So I guess I'll just stick to being the tour bus driver for my daughters' newly formed band, "Rock Paper Sisters."

This is EXACTLY what we love to hear. This little girl loved being on stage so much that she went back for a second week of the rock music camp and has even convinced her 6-year-old sister to be in a band with her. The band name is also pretty awesome, we think they have many years of rockin' out ahead of them.

If you have any stories like this, video of Camp Jam Friday Night concerts, or even video of a concert you have played with the band you formed at Camp Jam, send it in and we'll post it here.

If you want to find people to play with in your town, don't forget to go to the Camp Jam Forum.

Camp Jam Summer Day Camp Featured in Chicago Daily Herald

Kids rocking out while getting instruction at Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp in Chicago. (pictures courtesy of Chicago Daily Herald)

Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp was featured in the Chicago Daily Herald last week in an article titled "Summer Camp of Rock 'n' Roll". The best part of the whole piece is when the author, Corrinne Hess, talks about connections that are made beyond camp:

“Some of the kids keep in touch with each other and stick with the band even after the camp ends,” Grant said.

Andy Kaplian, 15, of Buffalo Grove; Kevin Iles, 16, of Skokie; and Vic Cuci, 17, of Hickory Hills met at Camp Jam last year when they were put together in a band.

The trio, named Aqua Tone, hadn’t seen each other since camp last year, which is a big reason the three came back.

“We just clicked,” Cuci said. “I drive two hours every day to get here. Obviously this is something I love to do.

That's what we're talking about, making good friends and great music at a rock music camp. Give the article a read and if you have any stories like this, let us know and we'll post them here.

Camp Jam People Profile: Chicago

Cjcampbig_logoAfter Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp gets done in Houston, the rock music camp will head even further north to the windy city of Chicago. Camp starts in Chicago on June 25, so let's take a look at who you will be responsible for your evolution from camper to rock star.

Each camp location has its own Music Director(s), each of which are musicians in their own right and responsible for hiring staff members, monitoring camp classes and activities and placing campers into bands based on ability level and compatibility.

Camp Jam will also feature a series of Master Classes, sessions with a legendary rocker in which they share their stories, talk about the role music has played in their lives and best of all jam with the campers.

Chicago

Music Directors:

Erik Grant is a freelance recording and mix engineer/producer. He is also a drummer/percussionist and does live sound including being the main sound engineer for AVM. Erik also teaches percussion at the prestigious Oakbrook Academy of Music and Theater.

Master Class Schedule (when each legendary rocker will be at camp)

June 26 - JIM PETERIK - One of the most successful rock songwriters of the past 4 decades, Peterik is best known for his band Survivor and for the rock anthem "Eye of the Tiger." Peterik has also written or co-written hit songs for 38 Special, Lynryd Skynyrd, REO Speedwagon, Doobie Brothers, Sammy Hagar and Cheap Trick, among others.  At 16 years old, Peterik founded the band Ides of March and wrote and sang the song “Vehicle,” which Bo Bice of American Idol fame went on to perform and record as his first single.

July 11 - RICKY BYRD - Byrd is probably most known for the time he spent as a member in Joan Jett’s band the Blackhearts. He played lead guitar alongside Joan for 12 years and toured the world over throughout the 80’s. In the early 90’s he decided to make his break and pursue his dream of doing his own music but not before he served some time working with the likes of Roger Daltrey and Ian Hunter from Mott the Hoople. He began gigging around New York City doing solo acoustic shows accompanied by Simon Kirke on drums from Bad Company and Kasim Sultan on bass from Meatloaf and Todd Rundgren, he issued a live CD called Tough Room.. This World in 1999.

July 18 - DEREK ST. HOLMES - Best known for being Ted Nugent's vocalist and rhythm guitar player, St. Holmes is the voice behind hit songs like "Stranglehold," "Hey Baby," "Got To Live It Up" and "Death By Misadventure." Indeed, all of Nugent’s platinum albums feature Derek St. Holmes on vocals. He is also a founding member of Big People, which was comprised of former Cars bassist/vocalist Ben Orr, Liberty DeVitto, Pat Travers and Jeff Carlisi.

Music scene info (with help from Wikipedia):

Chicago is known for its Chicago blues, Chicago soul, Jazz, and Gospel. This strong tradition of music and musical innovation have continued into contemporary styles. The city is the birthplace of the House style of music, and is the site of an influential Hip-Hop scene (Twista, Common). In the 1980s the city was a center for industrial, punk (Los Crudos, MK-Ultra) and new wave (spawning the famous Wax Trax! label); this influence continued into the alternative scene of the 1990s, with The Smashing Pumpkins emerging out of Chicago onto the global stage in the early 1990s. Chicago was an epicenter of the development of rave culture in the 1980s and all the way through today. There is a flourishing independent rock scene, including the recent explosion of Chicago indie/emo-style acts (Spitalfield, Fall Out Boy, Plain White T's, The Academy Is..., Chevelle + Alkaline Trio), with multiple festivals featuring various acts each year (Lollapalooza, the Intonation Music Festival and Pitchfork Music Festival being the most prominent).

Make sure to visit the Chicago Camp Jam MySpace page.

Stay tuned for more details about the cities we will be hitting and let us know if you have any more info you think we should add about your town.
