Camp Jam People Profile: Denver

In our continuing series about the people involved with Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp, we will now introduce the people at the Denver rock music camp. Camp starts in Denver on July 23th so if you haven't already signed up, now would be the time.

Each camp location has its own Music Director(s), each of which are musicians in their own right and responsible for hiring staff members, monitoring camp classes and activities and placing campers into bands based on ability level and compatibility.

Camp Jam will also feature a series of Master Classes, sessions with a legendary rocker in which they share their stories, talk about the role music has played in their lives and best of all jam with the campers.

So, on with the introductions: Denver.

Music Director:

Rob Fulton is a professional music engineer who also orchestrates and composes music for several different projects. His credits include CBS Television and Eminem and D12. He also teaches guitar in the Denver area.

July 25 -JEFF CARLISI -  Jeff Carlisi is the original guitarist and songwriter for the classic rock band 38 Special, which boasted more than five platinum albums during the 1980s and is best known for songs such as “Caught Up In You”, “Back Where You Belong” and “Hold On Loosely.” Today, Carlisi is helping young aspiring musicians make their rock star dreams come true with Camp Jam, which he co-founded in 2004.
July 25  - DEREK ST. HOLMES - Best known for being Ted Nugent's vocalist and rhythm guitar player, St. Holmes is the voice behind hit songs like "Stranglehold," "Hey Baby," "Got To Live It Up" and "Death By Misadventure." Indeed, all of Nugent’s platinum albums feature Derek St. Holmes on vocals. He is also a founding member of Big People, which was comprised of former Cars bassist/vocalist Ben Orr, Liberty DeVitto, Pat Travers and Jeff Carlisi.
August 1 - LIBERTY DEVITTO - Known as the quintessential “songwriter’s drummer,” DeVitto was the drummer for Billy Joel for more than 30 years, supplying the rhythmic framework for Joel’s multi-platinum hit albums (150 million sold) and legendary live concerts. DeVitto has been a session drummer on numerous recordings and has played live with artists such as: Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Stevie Nicks, Chuck Berry and Elton John.

Camp Jam Cleveland To Play Concerts at Local Music Venue

For the first time, one of the Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp cities will be playing their Friday concert at a music venue. The Boneyard in Cleveland, OH, has offered to host the concerts for all of the weeks of camp. They will be held for three Fridays in a row starting next Friday and are open to the public and free of charge. So, if you are in Cleveland and want to check out some kids rocking out a local music venue, then head over to The Boneyard and prepare to get blown away.

Get a Break From the House and the Folks Get a Tax Break

Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp was recently featured in an article on summer camps and tax breaks at the Don't Mess With Taxes blog.

Apparently, attendance at a summer day camp could be a benefit to year-end tax calculations. Says the blog:

And day camp could count toward your total costs. While the IRS doesn't consider sending your child to an overnight camp a legitimate work-related expense, the cost of sending the kid(s) to a day camp might count.

So, let your folks know that going to camp and letting you rock out with your friends could end up being really good for them on their taxes. The blog also sums up the Camp Jam experience very nicely:

The camp curriculum typically is heavy on classic bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. For the kids, it's much more fun learning how to nail a heavy riff than memorizing scales.

Michael Worley is a professional, full time entertainer with 20 years experience, performing for Walt Disney World, Royal Caribbean, 'Jelly Rolls' Dueling Pianos, ‘Clutch’ Rock & Roll Show Band, and The Pink Flamingos to name a few.

July 25 - PAT TRAVERS - Pat Travers of the Pat Travers band is considered a guitar hero by many, admired for his Hendrix-influenced style and excellent composing skills.  Most recently, Pat has toured with well known guitarists such as Jeff Watson of Night Ranger and Rick Derringer and Tim Keiffer of Cinderella.

Camp Jam Rock 'n' Roll Summer Day Camp is heading out to the OC for the first time this summer. Camp starts in the OC on July 9, so let's take a look at who you will be responsible for your evolution from camper to rock star.

Each camp location has its own Music Director(s), each of which are musicians in their own right and responsible for hiring staff members, monitoring camp classes and activities and placing campers into bands based on ability level and compatibility.

Carmen Grillo is best known as the ex-guitarist of the legendary group "Tower Of Power" has started his solo career in the autumn 1996. His songwriting and guitar work is instantly recognized by music fans around the world. Carmen Grillo's unique style has made him one of the most sought after recording session musicians, having been also known for his guitar session works on albums with such great talents as Smoky Robinson, Donna Summer, The Four Tops, Rita Coolidge Boz Scaggs, Luis Miguel,Bill Champlin and several other major artists.

July 10 - CARMINE APPICE - Appice first came to prominence as the flamboyant percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic foursome Vanilla Fudge. After his successful run with them, he then went on to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert and Appice. He later joined Rod Stewart's backing band, and played drums on (and co-wrote) such Stewart hits as "D'Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Young Turks." Appice has recorded with Stanley Clarke, Ozzy Osbourne, Ted Nugent, and Pink Floyd and played in the bands King Kobra and Blue Murder. He is known for his showmanship, which includes stick tosses and twirls, power fills, and double-bass drum bombs.

Director of education for Fazio's Frets and Friends music store, Brian Vaccaro, manages one of the best developed music programs in the industry. In addition to accommodating about 750 guitar students each week, Vaccaro offers clinics and seminars, forming a music curriculum that would rival many collegiate music programs. Fazio's draws on local artists and experts to conduct many of these clinics, on topics ranging from classical guitar to professional audio to playing in a rock band.

June 20 - RICKY BYRD - Byrd is probably most known for the time he spent as a member in Joan Jett’s band the Blackhearts. He played lead guitar alongside Joan for 12 years and toured the world over throughout the 80’s. In the early 90’s he decided to make his break and pursue his dream of doing his own music but not before he served some time working with the likes of Roger Daltrey and Ian Hunter from Mott the Hoople. He began gigging around New York City doing solo acoustic shows accompanied by Simon Kirke on drums from Bad Company and Kasim Sultan on bass from Meatloaf and Todd Rundgren, he issued a live CD called Tough Room... This World in 1999.
